Soul Journaling: Days 8 and 9

Soul Journaling Day Eight: The painted tape pages

Soul Journaling Day Nine: More work on the inchies

We’ve had snow on the ground today. We’re enjoying a quiet day by the fire, and amid our art materials, of course! My daughter created a lovely painting of the snow fall, and her friend painted a sunset over a stream flowing down the mountains. I’d share them here, but they haven’t given me permission, so you’ll have to use your imagination.

These pictures show some of the work that I’ve done today. I am loving these Soul Journaling prompts because I am learning so much about visual journaling, book binding (I’m learning that on the side), creating pages, making backgrounds, using art materials (which pens work on which types of paint, for example), and the whole never-ending process of creativity.

I saw a video today of someone using their artwork to punish children. I was a bit disturbed! What quicker way to turn children off from a desire to create and express themselves? I guess some people will use anything to create a “teachable moment.” Art should be used to foster positivity, joy, and hope. It’s such a healing and self-affirming activity. Many of the skills and knowledge gained from learning to create beautiful work translate directly to learning how to create a beautiful life.

AEDM Day 30: Fun With Tape

Soul Journaling: Hidden writing beneath tape

I had to post something on the last day of Art Every Day Month, and this is what I worked on today. (This is from day seven of Soul Journaling, and it will be worked further for day eight.) How did the month go by so fast? I can’t believe it’s over. But it isn’t over. My adventures in art are just beginning. There’s a new community on Ning started by MLB Studios where they are making zentangles and homemade journals — another (even better) manilla folder journal — and I’ll fit right in. So much fun to look forward to, so many cool things to do!

AEDM Day 20: Teesha-Style Page

with 13 comments

This is my first page inspired by Teesha Moore. Edited to add: This page was not planned at all, but I like the way it came out — portraying the idea of secrets sent into hibernation, and the masks we wear to hide them in our daily lives. We all have secrets that lie asleep, perhaps in wait for the day when spring will come and they will be free to come out into the sunshine and into the open. Some secrets, however, stay “asleep in their winter clothes,” warm and safe forever.

AEDM Day 9: Art Journal Pages

Art Journal

Today I am feeling a little under the weather, so it was a perfect day for making art. I had all day to start nine pages for my art journal. It was nice to have something so absorbing to take my attention away from how awful I was feeling! Since I don’t have all the supplies that I need to make a handmade journal, and the blank journal that I bought isn’t adequate for painting on the pages and sticking things to them (the pages are too thin), I started with loose pages bound with rings. I’m still very much in the experimental stage (I suppose art is always somewhat experimental)! I wanted to see which types of paper that I had on hand would work best, and whether I liked a straight-watercolor wash, or a gesso wash, so that’s why the pages are all different sizes. I haven’t been able to find good pens for drawing on all surfaces yet. Sharpies work great on watercolor, but not on pastels. I really need a white pen, too, so until I find all those things, I’ll just have to make do with what I have. You can see the page that I’ve spent the most time on, but it’s by no means done.

I’ve been inspired by artist Teesha Moore, whose videos I discovered yesterday. I’ve been wanting to find some way to combine words and images in art, and she has a whole series of how-to videos showing her carefree journaling style, by which she creates such beautiful pages. Below is a short video with an example of one of her homemade journals.
